ADVANCED B2

COURSE OVERVIEW

The primary aims of an Advanced B2 English course are to refine control of complex grammar systems, expand lexico-grammatical range, and build fluency in both spoken and written communication. Learners are prepared for higher academic study and formal examinations.

Understanding the Gist and Detail of Longer Texts and Talks

Objective: Comprehend main ideas, supporting detail, and implied meaning in extended discourse, including news reports, lectures, and authentic texts.
Grammar focus – Consolidation and Full Expansion of Tenses

  • Review/Consolidation: All B1-level tenses and their contrasts.

  • New/Extended Tenses at B2:

    • Present Perfect Continuous (full use, contrasts with Present Perfect Simple)

    • Past Perfect Simple (narrative sequencing, reported speech)

    • Past Perfect Continuous (background to past events)

    • Future Perfect Simple (will have + past participle)

    • Future Continuous (will be + -ing)

    • Mixed conditionals (combining past and present reference)

    • Modal verbs in the past (must have, might have, could have, should have + past participle)

Producing Clear, Detailed, and Coherent Speech and Writing

Objective: Express opinions, argue a case, and link ideas coherently in extended speech and writing (reports, articles, discursive essays).
Grammar focus:

  • Advanced passive voice (all tenses; reporting structures: It is said that…)

  • Cleft sentences for emphasis (What I need is…)

  • Inversion (Never have I…)

  • Nominalization (turning verbs/adjectives into nouns for academic writing)

Managing Interaction with Fluency and Nuance

Objective: Maintain and develop interactions, negotiate, hypothesize, and handle unfamiliar situations with fluency.
Grammar focus:

  • Full range of conditionals (first, second, third, mixed)

  • Wishes and regrets (I wish I had…, If only…)

  • Hedging and softening language (It seems that…, I suppose…)

  • Ellipsis and substitution for natural cohesion

Reading and Writing Complex Texts with Accurate Register

Objective: Interpret tone and register in authentic texts; produce extended, well-structured texts adapted to purpose (formal letters, essays, reports, reviews).
Grammar focus:

  • Reported speech in all tenses, with reporting verbs (admit, suggest, deny, warn)

  • Relative clauses: defining, non-defining, reduced forms (The man sitting next to me…)

  • Causative structures (have/get something done)

  • Discourse markers for argumentation (on the other hand, in addition, in contrast)

Independent study, reading, and writing practice are essential for success at this level.
