INTERMEDIATE B1

COURSE OVERVIEW

The primary aims of an Intermediate B1 English course are to consolidate previously learned grammar and extend learners’ ability to communicate independently and accurately across a range of familiar situations. Students move from basic everyday exchanges to more connected, detailed communication.

Understanding Main Ideas in Clear Standard Input

Objective: Comprehend conversations, talks, and straightforward texts, identifying both gist and specific detail.
Grammar focus – Consolidation and Extension of Tenses

  • Review/Consolidation: Present Simple & Continuous, Past Simple, “be going to” future, Present Perfect Simple.

  • New/Extended Tenses at B1:

    • Past Continuous (vs. Past Simple contrast)

    • Present Perfect Continuous (introduction)

    • Future forms: will, going to, present continuous for arrangements

    • First Conditional, Second Conditional

    • Passive Voice (Present Simple & Past Simple; introduction to other tenses)

Producing Connected Speech and Writing

Objective: Narrate experiences, describe events, and express opinions using a wider range of structures and vocabulary.
Grammar focus:

  • Comparatives and superlatives (with modifiers: a lot, far, slightly)

  • Articles (a/an, the, zero article) in extended use

  • Relative clauses (defining)

  • Linkers for sequencing and contrast (first, then, however, although)

Managing Social and Transactional Exchanges

Objective: Handle situations in travel, work, and study; make suggestions, give advice, and express preferences more confidently.
Grammar focus:

  • Modal verbs: must, have to, should, might, could

  • Question tags (isn’t it?, don’t you?)

  • Quantifiers (a lot of, many, much, some/any, few/little)

Reading and Writing Longer Texts

Objective: Understand straightforward articles and stories; produce narratives, opinion paragraphs, and emails with clearer cohesion.
Grammar focus:

  • Reported speech (statements and questions)

  • Extended passive voice (Past, Present, and introduction to Future)

  • Adverb placement and use for emphasis

PROGRAMME HOURS

This is a 3 hours per week programme (e.g., 2×90 min or 3×60 min) due to the extensive B1 curriculum covering multiple tense systems, grammar structures, skills practice, and exam-style tasks. Regular independent study is expected.

Prerequisites

  • Holder of Anglia Pre-Intermediate (A2+) or Equivalent Qualification

  • Or: Placement test assessing grammar range, vocabulary, and receptive skills.
